The correct medical term for yeast infection is
Candidiasis, which refers to an infection caused by the multiplication of yeast
(known as Candida) in the body. Fungus and yeast can live in the body and
cause no problems, but when it grows out of control, infection occurs in warm and
moist areas of the body such as the vagina or mouth. The most common form of
yeast infection is found in the vagina as well as oral thrush in infants.
What To Do When the Infection Takes
Hold
Yeast infections can occur under the armpits and while the
body is usually successful in fighting infection, sometimes the infection can
take hold, especially if there is a cut or a breakdown of skin. Babies can offer
suffer from oral thrush or thrush in the folds of skin where the diaper is fixed.
Other common places where infection can take hold include the dentures, beneath
the breast and also in the lower abdomen.
On the plus side, if you find that you are suffering from a yeast
infection, you will be pleased to know that the condition is usually very
temporary and can be cleared up very simply. It is however important that
you treat it as soon as possible because in rare circumstances, it can
spread throughout the body and become a systemic yeast infection, which also
has a high risk of fatality. However it should be noted that this is a very
extreme situation. Yeast infections can also be indicative of other more
serious conditions, especially if the infection is recurring and chronic.
You should be sure to see your doctor for a consultation if this is the
case. Normal yeast infections will clear up with the proper treatment after
about a week or two. If yours is still not cleared up after this amount of
time, it is adviseable to get your doctor to test for other ailments.
You should be very careful if your infection is reoccurring
because as mentioned above, it could be a symptom of a more serious condition.
Illnesses linked to yeast infections include diabetes, leukemia and can even
suggest that the person is suffering from AIDS. There will however usually be
other symptoms in the case of all of these illnesses and you should not overly
panic if you have a yeast infection. With the proper treatment, yeast infections
will clear in a short space of time and will usually be the end of any more
infections if you use preventative measures. However, if you have a weakened
immune system, it may take longer for your symptoms to clear up completely. Your
doctor will be able to advise if you are particularly concerned.
