What is Wakeboarding?

You may have heard of wakeboarding, but do you know exactly what it is? Some assume that wakeboarding is like water skiing. This is somewhat right, but wakeboarding and water skiing have several differences.

Wakeboarding is riding the wake (or wave) of a speed boat. Water skiing and snowboarding are actually the inspiration of wakeboarding, and some surfing techniques are thrown in for good measure. Wakeboarders are towed by a boat that can sometimes go up to 25mph. The more experienced wakeboarders are towed at faster speeds. Wakeboarding is akin to snowboarding because it uses one board instead of two skis. Wakeboarding is similar to water skiing because the wakeboarder is pulled by a boat.

Wakeboarding is a very creative sport. In fact, many of the wakeboarding maneuvers and techniques came about by accident -- they were the result of the carefree nature of wakeboard riders.

Wakeboarding is riding the wake (or wave) of a speed boat.

Wakeboards can be between 150cm and 117cm. They are available in a variety of styles, such as the continues rocker style and the three-stage rocker style. A few of the well known manufacturers of wakeboards are CWB, Hyperlite, Gator Boards, Liquid Force, Ronix and Surge Wakeboards.

Wakeboarding lets the wakeboard rider to do amazing jumps and impressive tricks that wouldn't even be possible if the rider was wearing skis. Wakeboarding can be considered an extreme sport in that it can be dangerous, but beginning wakeboard riders are advised to begin at slow speeds to minimize the impact of crashes and stacks if and when they do happen.

If you are into extreme sports, put wakeboarding on your list of extreme sports to try.
