VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is a
method of recording and making telephone conversations using the
Internet. This is indeed very different from the days when one had
to book long distance calls through operators. Direct dialing
became a reality towards the end of the last century, but even
bypassing a switchboard and a telephone exchange, does not match
the convenience and economy of VOIP. Convergence of the Internet
and cellular telephones have potentials for further breakthroughs
as far as VOIP is concerned. The technology has unprecedented
benefits for both leisure and work. Countries with fast and cheap
Internet connections hardly need traditional telephones from now
on.
It would be most unusual to find people today
who do not use the Internet in any way. Computers have become
almost ubiquitous appendages of modern lives, and Internet
connections through satellites revolutionize the ways in which we
can stay in reality with friends, colleagues, and with the world at
large. VOIP lets us send and to receive sound inputs through the
Internet. Since most connections have fixed rentals, it implies
that we can speak to others free of any incremental costs. It is
also possible to conduct conferences with multiple individuals at
remote locations, therefore saving on both costs and travel times.
VOIP can also be used to leave messages for anyone who is not
online at an explicit point of time.
The Disadvantages of VOIP
VOIP, for all its advantages and benefits, must be used with
care. It will not work well if the party at the other end of a call
does not have a broadband connection. Capacities for smooth
transmissions of conversations in real time can also be littered
with server capacities, and the numbers of people involved.
Moreover, VOIP tends to be much heavier on Internet usage than
text. This may be a subject matter for subscriptions with
relatively limited transmission amounts. Parties who you call
habitually, or with who you make very long calls, should not land
up with huge bills from their Internet service providers. It is
only polite to envision on this aspect before using VOIP
extensively to converse with anyone.
Awareness that an Internet call costs nothing
can lead to people using up line capacities unnecessarily.
Employees have always been suspect of abusing office telephones to
make personal calls, and this risk may well be accentuated through
a VOIP facility. Even when calls are made from personal Internet
connections, or for official purposes on business Intranets, you
will need to keep the value of time in mind! While VOIP messages
and calls may well be relinquished prying ears, this is a
technological fact that all transactions could be traced to the PCs
involved. Conversations off the record or anonymity are actually
impossible through this system, which for people with genuine
intentions, can only be an advantage!
