The Importance of the Table Tennis Net

In almost all sports where there is a need to divide the area into two, it is the net that is usually the designated divider. Two popular examples of sports that uses net are badminton and tennis. It will not be a surprise then if table tennis said to be inspired by tennis will also have a net with the same purpose. The table tennis net serves as a guide for the opposing players during the duration of the entire match. It is also vital for players in terms of scoring points. Players should always be on the look out for their side of the court - that is one of the keys to winning matches in table tennis.

The table tennis net also determines whether a service is good for play or not. A service that touches the net is called a let service. According to table tennis rules, a player can commit unlimited number of let serves but only when a ball that is served touches the servers area and then goes over the net cleanly to land on the opponents area can it be called a good serve and eligible for play.

Before delving deeper into the role of the table tennis net in a table tennis game, let us first look at the technical requirements of a table tennis net. A typical table tennis net should measure 6 inches or 15. 2 centimeters in length and should have the width of 152. 5 centimeters ( the width of a table tennis table ) with an overhang of 15. 25 centimeters. The table tennis net divides the court area in two equal parts. A player can move far from the table but the net serves as a delineation or guide with regards to how far he can go.

The Importance of the Table Tennis NetA ball at play can touch a net but it has to go to the other side for it to be called a live ball or a ball eligible for play. Although the situation at hand means score, players do not want to score that way because during those cases it seems like it is not a fair game because of the deflection of the ball. As much as possible, players like to score points without the ball touching the net because that way the player can say he scored based on his skills and not just out of luck.

The width of the table tennis net should not limit a players actions within the dimensions of the table tennis table. The table tennis net divides the table into two but as long as the ball lands in the opposing court once and it so happened that the ball deflected beyond the net but sill on the side of the opposing court then the opponent should make a legal return otherwise the other player will score a point.
