How Table Tennis started in China ?
Table Tennis was popular in England as a recreational sport or a mild social diversion for the rich and the famous. As it evolved, it became known by different names such as Gossima and Whiff Whaff but the most popular being Ping - Pong. The label Ping - Pong was coined by J. Jaques & Son and is said to have come from the sound made when a player strikes the ball. Before the illustrations of table tennis being played were confined to domestic surroundings but now that it is being played in tournaments, the illustrations have become more professional in nature. It was in the early years of this century that Ping - Pong was starting to be seen as a sport rather than just as an after dinner amusement it was originally known for. The improvised version was first introduced to Japan and then later on China and Korea caught on the craze. In Japan, the approach of people with table tennis as a sport is community based and definitely these days table tennis is really advanced as a sport.
There are Dojos meaning training centers all over Japan and available for everyone even visiting tourists at minimal cost. One visiting player noted that the strong sense of community and solidarity helps the players in Japan up the level of the game and inspires the players to always give their best. Koreans are also climbing the charts in terms of winning in international competitions and in raising talents who would become world class athletes. China has dominated the world of table tennis in both singles and doubles and whether man's or woman's. You will see an awful lot of Chinese names on the top 20 of the world rankings. The future is bright for these Chinese stars because most of them are young and that means we will see more of these young guns in years to come.
An interesting anecdote tells us that one of the signs that the Chinese are ready to accept the Americans in their land is when the Chinese invited the Americans to pay a visit to their homeland. This happened on April 6, 1971 when the American table tennis team was then in Japan for the 31st World Table Tennis Championship. The Chinese team invited the American team for an all - expense paid trip to the Peoples Republic of China. This was indeed a historic moment that even Time magazine gave the event a name - Ping Pong diplomacy. Those American players and officials were the first ever group of Americans allowed to enter China since the 1949 communist takeover. China is now more open to the world but it is nice to know that one sport and that is Table Tennis once paved a way for outsiders to explore the beauty of China. Obviously, table tennis is very popular in China. Young kids play it on the streets as they dream to become the next table tennis superstars of the nation.
