Table Tennis, The Game and the history behind it

Ricky is a sophomore in college majoring in sports and development. In order for a student to graduate, it is required for the individual to be aware of the rules and regulations of each sport.

This semester, it was going to be about table tennis. This is a popular sport so it will not be that difficult to get the much needed information.

Ricky went to the library and did the research using the campus computer. Most of the hits first described the history of the game so the person decided to read it.

Table tennis first originated as a game played by some rich Victorians. There were no rackets, ball or even a net separating the two players back then. The people played using cigarette box lids, a ball of yarn and a pile of books from the library that served as the boundary.

It was only a few years later that people decided to make the game much better by making a racket and using a celluloid ball. This changed everything because the equipment could be made in large numbers commercially which will later to spread across Europe, to North America and eventually to the Far East.

Many people in the West know this game as table tennis. In China and many parts of Asia, this is better known as ping - pong. The term was derived by the maker of Parker Brothers who brought this to American and gave it this name because of the sound produced when the paddle makes contact with the ball.

Table Tennis, The Game and the history behind itThe first world championship tournament that mainly consisted of Europeans was held in the early 1900s. It was only after the Second World War the certain rules and equipment was again modified. This made it racket lighter for the player to carry and strike the ball with.

Table tennis was introduced into the Olympics in 1988. The rules stated that such tournaments should be held in a 9 feet by 5 feet rectangular table. The type of ball used should be 40 mm but this may change depending on the guidelines set by the governing body in charge of the game.

There are no rules regarding the type of racket to be used. It is advisable to wear some loose clothing so this will not hinder the player from serving and receiving volleys from the other player.
