Understanding Solar Power Systems

If you have ever passed a field which has a number of large mirrors all pointing towards the sun, the likelihood is that you are looking at a solar power system. The aim of these systems is to direct the sunlight to one particular area and use the heat to heat up the liquid (such as oil) that flows along the pipes. This is actually known as a Parabolic-trough system. It heats the oil which in turn is used to boil water in order to power a steam generator which then powers electricity.

This is an incredibly efficient system which works by using U-shaped mirrors which are designed to attract and collect heat from the sun which is then transferred onto the receiver. Once the receiver has been warmed up, it transfers into fluid which helps to power the engine. The heat from the sun actually makes the fluid to swell up against the piston and produces a form of mechanical power. There is enough power generated which can power generators and alternators. The molten salt which runs through the receiver heats up and creates electricity through a steam generator. The slat holds in the heat for a number of days before it is transformed into electricity. The downside however is that it is only really suitable for industrial power because so many solar panels are required.   But, there can be enough power generated to create enough energy for several days and sometimes even more.

Understanding Solar Power SystemsBy studying the project and ones which are similar, we can start to realize how solar power actually works. It is only when we actually see how much power is conserved that we can start to realize how much is lost and wasted each year. Using solar panels such as these is very beneficial to businesses because there is not the same amount of problems such as power failures and the like. As long as all of the machinery involved is taken care of, there should be no problems whatsoever. This type of industrial solar power can actually trap a lot of heat from the sun every day, mirrors help with this as they reflect the sunlight. It is also beneficial to have the solar panels in a large field which is open and no obstacles such as large trees in the way blocking out the sunlight.

Every year, scientists come up with new ideas after extensively researching the idea of solar power.  Steam power has always been used in relation to solar power and even today is what solar power really relies on. In the future, many fields will actually be full to the brim with mirrors which are all used for solar power. Maybe it will become so popular that other countries !V especially those who enjoy a great deal of annual sunshine !V adopt the idea as well. Until then however, more traditional methods will be used to heat our water and homes as well as powering all of our electricity.

I am a firm believer that for the most part the the sun drives global warming/cooling. Wouldn't you figure that a guy doing a book on solar power would figure that out? I also do not like waste. I think solar power is a smart move on its own conservative (read independence) ($$$$$) merits. This book could save natural resources by sticking to the topic stated in its title and not doing the socialist propagandizing. 300 pages of waste (trees, shipping, ink etc.) and 66 pages of what you are buying the book for. It is the first and last DUMMIES book I buy as I'm no dummy.

The Solar PV Design and Review text is an excellent source for detailed information needed for real life work in solar energy. It is well written and organized, with exercises to help test yourself.

As with all written material, it will quickly become dated with respect to references and NEC code. But the basic technical information will remain sound.

This text is frequently used in the NABCEP Certificate of Knowledge training.

This definitely in no how to book. The author's intent is to make you more knowledgeable prior to having a solar technician out. He does not to tell you how to do it yourself, he actually discourages it for several reasons which he lists. I think you can build them yourself. But he does show you how to size a system and give you a in depth look at the many different solar possibilities that are available.

I am new to solar technology, and have found this book to be very helpful. It is well documented and gives you many details. The authors try and keep it fun when they can, to keep your interest. Researching this subject on the Internet is very hard to do for solar, its hard to know is which system to use. Without this book, my head would still be spinning attempting to determine who has the best kit.
