A Brief Guide to Shopping for a Night Vision Security Camera

Night vision cameras are possibly the most important piece of equipment that you need to add to you home security system. This is because it can capture clear footage at night – which is when most burglars strike. Night vision cameras can see in total darkness as they come complete with built in infrared sensors.

Most of these cameras have the ability to switch from color to black and white if it means a clearer picture will be captured. They should all come complete with an AC power supply as well – but this is not an essential requirement.

Which Model to Choose?

A Brief Guide to Shopping for a Night Vision Security CameraThere are a few models on the market which you should look at in more detail if you are considering buying a night security camera. The first one is the NV652. This operates without an image intensifier – basically it is free from a certain degree of limitations that are placed on other models. It can capture high quality images even in the pitch black as it illuminates through the black light and allows these images to enter the CCD unhindered. It is one of the best for capturing images in the dark and is very competitively priced.

Another camera to bear in mind is the Carson NiteMax Digital Night Viewer. This state of the art model is very advanced and features solid state circuitry which can operate in all conditions – day or night. It uses the latest in high resolution image processing ensuring that a clear picture is produced every time it is used. It also comes complete with an RCA video output jack which allows easy connection f to a VCR or camcorder, if you anted to record the images.

The Weaver NightView Digital Night Vision Scope is another excellent option. It is one of the most reliable cameras on the market and comes highly recommended. The system is built on the most developed technology which ensures crystal clear image results.

It also comes complete with a video-out port which can be quickly (and more importantly, easily) connected to a monitor or camcorder if you wanted to carry out surveillance.  This camera is more expensive than the other models mentioned in this article, but you will get value for money and the amount of unique features available pay for itself.

Review (rating: 5):
I was very pleased with the overall quality and usefulness of this system. It's easy to set it up & use quickly (1/2 hour). It comes with a long enough cord to remote the camera to another room. Directions are brief & well written, in English. The motion detection kicks in fast. It also turns off fast so you will get multiple video clips if the subject holds still for a bit, but it also doesn't waste space. The resolution and color are true. The user interface uses icons so it's easy to figure out what to select and you don't have to keep referring to the manual. Playback setup is simple - plug the base unit into a TV. It's SO nice not to have to buy a monitor($$)! We experimented in daylight and darkness. Of course the image in daylight is best, and in the dark the image is grainy, but that is to be expected. It comes with a memory card that has enough space for a few days, depending on how much activity is being recorded. If you want to leave the system for a longer period of time, you can upgrade to a 2 GB card easily & cheaply ($7.50@Amazon). The software includes a quick erase feature so after reviewing the pictures&videos, you can easily erase the card, or pop the card into your PC to email a single picture or video. File storage is logical - files are stored by day in separate directories so it's easy to go back to a certain day. It also has a quick review feature that plays back all the files from one day starting with the first, and you can skip fwd to the next video by pressing the buttons on the base unit, saving time. They should have combined the power cords for the base unit and the included camera - you need 2 outlets near the base unit (no big deal). If you mount the camera upside down, the picture is upside down also, unless you take apart the camera and reverse the lens, which can be done. I researched alternatives online and saw systems for more money that did less. I didn't need expensive online reviewing features or audio. This system gave me the video I wanted without the high price tag. Good product for the cost!

I bought this camera to replace a broken one for our 4 camera security system. I originally paid over $100 for each camera in the system and found that this one I purchased works as well if not better than the expensive ones. I am very happy with it.
