Loon Mountain Recycling

Loon Mountain can be found in the heart of New Hampshire and is part of the White Mountains. If you are familiar with New Hampshire, you will be aware that it is home to some of the best winter sports in the country. It might not be one of the most popular spots to visit for winter sports, but the facilities are excellent and Loon Mountain is looking to be put on the map. Another thing Loon Mountain is famous for is recycling both energy and waste and this will hopefully lead to other towns following in the residents’ footsteps.

If you picture New Hampshire and the White Mountains, especially in winter, you will no doubt think of log fires, coca and marshmallows. As well as wooly hats, gloves, scarves and snow – basically it is very cold! This is a very accurate picture, apart from for the last 10 years; there have not been many snow storms. There is of course an occasional blizzard,   and much of the White Mountain Resorts are covered in about a foot of snow, but the winters just aren’t like they used to be. Unfortunately, most of the snow today actually has to be manufactured and brought in.

Loon Mountain RecyclingMany resorts found in these mountains run snow-making machines which are designed to save energy and have recycling in mind. The gun of the machine actually generates its own compressed air and therefore saves on energy as many of these machines have a separate compressed and use up a lot of power. In these mountains, they’ve even combined a ‘disconnect’ between two of their most popular slopes; Little Sister Trail and Loon Mountain Park. This means that they can service both slopes with the same machine, thus saving on even more energy.

They practice other methods of recycling such as changing all of their light bulbs in the accommodation and amenities to compact fluorescent bulbs which use 75 per cent less energy and actually last a staggering 10 times longer than the standard light bulb.  Also in the accommodation facilities, bathrooms have been fitted with motion sensors for both the lights and fans. This ensures that no power is being used when no one is in the room.  All chalets have been fitted with new windows and doors so that no heat can leak out and the chalets therefore require less energy to heat them.

If you are considering a skiing trip this winter, how about changing your usual plans and heading to the many resorts in New Hampshire. Not only will you have an exciting holiday, but you will also be helping to save energy which is kinder to the planet. If you have made many changes in your home to counter the effects of waste, why let your holiday be ruined by excess energy. Visit somewhere which is as environmentally conscious as you are.
