Hotels That Recycle

If you are planning a trip away – regardless of whether it is for business or pleasure, you now have the choice of finding a hotel which is environmentally friendly!  There are what have become known as ‘green’ hotels that try their hardest to recycle and reduce the amount of energy consumed annually.

There are many ways for hotels to save energy and recycle which include: only cleaning the bedrooms on request. This cuts down on the amount of laundry and electricity used for vacuuming etc – as well as the amount of man power actually needed.

Many hotels also request that you re-use your towels rather than having fresh ones every day. This saves a lot of energy – especially in busy hotels. Some hotels also have their own bins for recycling glass, plastic and aluminum. This way both staff and guests can enjoy the luxury of east recycling and therefore the program becomes a lot more successful. By something as simple as making the bins readily available, it is possible to see an enormous increase in the recycling efforts of both guests and staff.

Hotels That RecycleHotels that are on the ‘green’ list are leading the way in terms of recycling and actually find that over 70 per cent of their customers have helped to develop energy and cost saving ideas and fully abide by the rules.  A lot of these hotels put suggestion cards in the room which guests fill out and many of these ideas have been employed by the hotels.

Hotels which are popular for business meetings, formal dinners and the like, simple changes such as using pourers for sugar and pitchers for cream significantly cut down on the waste produced by using individually wrapped sugars/sweeteners and cups of cream. The end-of-the-day waste has seen a significant drop in hotels which have changed to this. Some hotels now even let their guests know that water will be poured on request at meetings, rather than having large jugs which just sit there and get thrown away afterwards.

As well as these energy and cost saving means, which directly involve the guests, there are many things which are being done that the average guest does not see. For example, water-saving devices save the water that is flushed by about 75 per cent. This never actually affects the flush in anyway but does make for enormous savings on the cost of utilities. The way it works is that a toilet tank fill diverter is fitted into the head of a shower to cut down on the amount of water used, but it will not be noticed by any guests.

It is very promising that more and more hotels and guest houses are becoming environmentally friendly and conscious about energy saving issues. It is vital for everyone to start cutting down on waste and cutting costs. If you make the effort to choose a hotel which does this already, those that do not will be forced into changing their ways. That way, even when we are away from home, we can still be assured that we are helping the environment.
