If
you are
pregnant, you
will no doubt
have researched
the ins and
outs of what
you are allowed
to do and what
you are advised
against doing.
For example,
most people are
aware that they
should cut down
on caffeine and
also stop
smoking and
avoid alcohol.
More and more
tests are being
carried out to
see if certain
foods should
also be avoided
while women are
pregnant.
It
is very
important for
all pregnant
women to eat a
balanced diet
in order that
their baby is
given all the
vitamins and
minerals which
are needed in
order to grow.
However, you
should be aware
of what foods
to avoid which
could
potentially
harm your baby
and indeed
yourself.
Raw meat should
always be
avoided so you
can no longer
have any raw
steaks or
burgers. You
should make
sure that every
bit of meat you
eat is well
done. Cold deli
meat should
also be avoided
because of the
risk of
listeria.
Listeria can
cross the
placenta and
can cause an
infection or
even blood
poisoning. You
could always
steam or reheat
deli meat which
will help to
reduce the
risk.
Other
foods
which may
contain
harmful
bacteria
include
certain
cheeses
such as
brie, feta
and
gorgonzola.
These
contain
unpasteurised
milk which
also
contains
listeria.
Eating fish
while you are
pregnant has
always been the
subject of a
big debate
because while
some fish
contains
essential
nutrients,
others contain
a high level of
mercury.
Shark,
swordfish, king
mackerel and
sushi all
contain a lot
of mercury so
should be
avoided
throughout
pregnancy.
Studies have
linked mercury
to brain damage
and other
conditions
affecting
children’s
development.
Tuna also
contains a lot
of mercury but
canned, light
tuna has a
lower amount of
mercury and can
be eaten in
moderation. Raw
shellfish also
should be
avoided.
Raw eggs or
anything
containing raw
eggs must be
avoided at all
times during
pregnancy
because of the
exposure to
salmonella.
This means that
you cannot eat
any raw cookie
dough, brownie
mix or sauces
such as
hollandaise,
Caesar dressing
and blue cheese
dressing. If
you are dining
out, always ask
if any of the
sauces contain
raw
eggs.
There has never
been a more
important time
to be careful
about what you
eat then when
you are
pregnant. Some
of the foods
mentioned in
this article
have been
linked to
miscarriages
and birth
defects.
However, if you
have already
eaten these
foods and are
pregnant, don’t
panic, the
chances are
that both you
and your baby
are fine, but
it is wise to
avoid them in
the future.
