Control Your Weight During Pregnancy

Almost any gynecologist will inform you that the recommended weight gain for any pregnancy is between 25-30 pounds. Some women will of course gain more while others will gain less. But you need to make sure that you are not gaining weight too quickly throughout your pregnancy. Too much weight gain will increase you chances of having a c-section and put you at risk of being overweight once you have given birth.

Most doctors will say that if you are of a normal weight and put on over 3 ½ pounds in your first trimester; you are putting weight on too fast. If you were overweight to being with and put on more than 2 pounds in this early period then you are gaining weight too quickly. You should however bear in mind that despite putting a lot of weight on in your first trimester, this does not mean that you will gain a lot over the entire pregnancy.

Some women will gain a lot in the first trimester because their morning sickness is so bad that the only thing they can keep down is carbs. However, they may end their entire pregnancy having gained just 25 pounds. If you weight is not slowing down as you enter your second trimester, there are some weighs in which you can try to minimize weight gain.

The first thing you should do is completely cut out the useless calories. It is never a good idea to start dieting while you are pregnant, but if you are gaining weight too fast, you need to stop eating so much. Using skimmed milk instead of full fat will certainly help as well taking the skin off your grilled chicken and boiling and grilling instead of frying. You should also cut down on the number of sweets you eat as these are empty calories providing no nutritional value.

You should also cut down on the amount of fat you eat. Start looking at how much hidden fat is in all of the food which you eat. Salads for example are healthy on their own, but as soon as you load the dressings on them, they can become loaded with fat. Also, look at how much oil you use when you are cooking and use good oils such as extra virgin olive oil.

Another important factor in decreasing your rising weight gain is to exercise. Consult your doctor and see what would be best for you. Many doctors recommend walking a few times a week as this is one of the best things you can do for both yourself and your baby. It will help with the weight gain and could also make childbirth easier. You could also consider joining a prenatal exercise class.

If you don’t pay attention to what you eat, you may find that you are overeating without even realizing.  A good way for this is to always eat at the table and take your time while you eat. Have healthy snacks around and only eat when you are hungry – not for the sake of it.

Don’t use the excuse that you are eating for two. There is no need to eat empty calories regardless of how pregnant you are. If you don’t put on too much weight during pregnancy, you will find it easier to lose the weight once you have given birth.
