Blackberry GPS: You Have A Choice
Of Using Internal Or External GPS Receivers
Blackberry GPS is available in two versions which
mean that you can either have your device have an internal GPS
receiver, or you could choose to have an external Bluetooth GPS
receiver that will in both instances provide you with GPS data on
your Blackberry instrument. As of now, only the Blackberry 7520 and
the 7100i have the capability of having integrated GPS receivers
and if you have some other device you will be in need of Bluetooth
GPS receivers, though if your device does not support Bluetooth you
would not be able to have GPS on your Blackberry.
GPS Software
The next thing you have to worry about regarding
Blackberry GPS is the GPS software to use which includes software
for navigation, mapping/field navigation and also tools for GPS.
The first thing that will strike you when you think GPS would be
that it is really nothing but navigation software, which though
true, also means that there are still other things that can be done
with a GPS device. And, if you are going to take your Blackberry
GPS outdoors then it would pay to have mapping/navigation software
on board because it is ideal for the outdoors and also where there
are no big streets about, and this kind of software lends it very
handily when you go hiking, biking or for some other similar
activity.
Your Blackberry GPS would also come
in handy when it also has mapping software and a good option
would be Trimble Outdoors that is especially designed for
outdoor travel and with it you can prepare as well as plan
your outdoor activities on a PC, though it is mainly targeting
US users only.
In addition, you should consider Blackberry GPS
tools such as MapQuest Find Me that will let you find the location
of your family and friends and even co-workers though only if they
are also using the tool as well. There is the Point of Interest
(POI) with which you can search and let its program show you
directions turn after turn without a map. Another option available
in GPS tools is MobileLocator which also lets you find locations of
people using the MobileLocator program and which also let you find
a gas station, bank, ATM or restaurant with the help of its own
Point of Interest feature.
So, with your Blackberry GPS and the proper
software and GPS tools, you should have a great time and not have
anything to worry about, and according to some rumors there is a
lot of new stuff that should be available pretty soon including
internal GPS support which means if you wait a while you could be
in for some more pretty interesting GPS connectivity.
Gilsson UBM Portable Car Non-Skid Friction Beanbag Dashboard Mount
Amazon Price: $19.95 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 Review (rating: 5): I use it with my TomTom and it works great. Makes moving from car to car a breeze and don't have to worry about changing things. The main base or having a base in each car.
Portable Friction Beanbag Dashboard Mount for Apple iPod, iPhone, Zune Media ...
Average Customer Rating: 5.0 Review (rating: 5): Great. The square shape fits perfectly in the square inlay of my Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has a firm friction grip and doesn't tip over from the wight of my TomTom One XL (which is a large gps). The only thing with the product is that the suction cup from my TomTom usually has a firm suction to the windshield but did not stick well to this bean bag mount. I used the plastic adhesive disk that came with my TomTom and stuck it to this mount and now the suction cup holds perfectly.
Gilsson GUSB5V-B Garmin Nuvi 200-780, Zumo, eTrex C, Colorado, Magellan, TomT...
Amazon Price: $23.95 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 Review (rating: 3): Nice cable for direct wire up of the Garmin Nuvi. The only awkward part is the fact that the step down transformer (black egg looking thing) is only 2 feet from the plug that goes into the Nuvi. That makes it hard to hide the cable from view. It has a small led to let you know that it is connected to power and that seems to draw a small amount of current even when not plugged into the Nuvi. Keep that in mind if current drain is a concern.
Garmin 010-00579-00 Mobile 10 Bluetooth GPS System
Amazon Price: Too low to display Used Price: $114.99 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 Review (rating: 5): I used this GPS on the northwest of Argentina, in cities and open spaces and worked very well. The Nokia E51 is based on the Symbian operating system. The software could be improved, but worked well enough to navigate. The GPS unit, once it gets the satellites, can continue getting its position in the streets. I never expected to continue to get my position in such difficult conditions. As being separate from the phone, it has the advantage of being able to be placed on the windshields where it can get the satellites signal, and the disadvantage of being easy to forget it. The battery worked fine (as new).
Holux M-1000 32 Channel Bluetooth GPS Receiver By Buygpsnow
Used Price: $31.99 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 Review (rating: 5): I purchased this GPS receiver for my Blackberry Curve since Verizon blocks the internal GPS. I paid $40 for the product and it is an unbelievable bargain. It synced up with satellites almost immediately - before I could even enable bluetooth on the phone, even when I was in the city. Never had a problem except for the tunnels, which is expected. For some reason I thought the product would be bigger, but it is very small and lightweight. Haven't tested the battery life yet, but the car charger cable is long enough to put the unit anywhere in the front. Very nice GPS receiver, leagues better than the my friend had that took minutes to sync.
