Paralegals and Standards

Despite many things (such as negativity and public opinion) say otherwise, attorneys are expected to follow basic standards in both their professional and personal lives.  Because of this, a paralegal is supposed to abide by the same standards. This is basically, because people in the legal field command a lot of trust from the public. Trust is essential and if the person you are expected to place your trust in is not an upstanding member of the community, how is anyone supposed to believe him let alone trust him.

Regardless of whether the practice where you work specializes in criminal law or business law, or in fact anything else, both yourself and the attorney can have a significant effect on your clients’ lives – either for better or for worse. That is a lot of responsibility!

It is essential that you are very professional and also competent at your job, but it is also important that you always follow the standards set for everyone working in law. Your personal life should be kept private and you should do nothing in your private time which compromises your position. You are a figure of authority and your personal life should reflect this.  You need to work and live with integrity as well as have good moral standards and high ethics.

Every single one of your clients deserves the best representation you can give them and you should make sure that you take your job very seriously so that you are 100 per cent professional at all time.  It is crucial that you do not abuse drugs or alcohol, have no secret criminal past and live by the laws which you learn. Only that way can you represent anyone to the best of your ability. 

There is no room for anyone in the legal world who is a recreational drug user or who drinks to extreme. You need to practice what you preach otherwise your advice will be useless. It will end up in no one being able to trust a word you say if you act in an unprofessional and illegal manner.

You are expected to follow proper standards of practice and behavior just as your attorney is. There is actually a code which you must follow and while the code itself makes its point very clearly, it is actually common sense of what you should and shouldn’t do. You need to ensure that you work as hard as you can and maintain a good way of living in your personal life.

By working as a paralegal, you will be presented with a number of exciting options and opportunities for you to explore. However, they are only open to professionals who treat their job and those around them with the utmost respect.

At the end of the day, the legal field is not for everyone and before you make a leap of faith into a paralegal role, you need to make sure that you can abide by the strict rules which apply.
