With thee onset of identity theft in offices,
businesses have been forced to protect the personal information of
their staff and clients. Paper shredders are the best way to ensure
that all confidential documents are destroyed safely and that
potential thieves cannot obtain any information. There is a wide
variety of shredders on the market which are suitable for all sizes
of offices. This article will look at how important shredders have
become and some of the different models available.
A law was brought out in 2005 to ensure that all
businesses destroyed confidential documents carefully so that the
identity of people would be protected. The ‘Fair and Accurate
Credit Transactions Act’ (FACTA) states that companies must destroy
items securely otherwise they will face heavy fines and other legal
consequences.
If your business is looking to invest in a paper
shredder, you must take into consideration how much security is
required. The security level of each shredder is judged on a scale
of 1 to 6 with 6, with the higher numbers denoting higher levels of
security. You should always work out what security levels you will
be requiring and buy a shredder with that in mind. However it is
important to note that the price of shredders increase as the
security level increases.
The type of cut that the shredder produces is
interlinked with the security rating as strip cutters, which are
the most common, offer an end result of pieces 1/4" wide. The cross
cut shredders are recommended when a higher level of security is
required. Other factors which need to be taken into consideration
are how the shredder will be used; how much shredding will need to
be done on a regular basis and will there be a continuous amount to
be shredded on a daily basis.
It may be important that your shredding is as
convenient and not encroach on too much work time. There are many
additional features which the higher end shredders boast designed
to make shredding simple. These include a start/stop sensor which
actually checks for paper in the machine and activates the motor; a
reverse feed for paper jams; bigger capacity and a much larger
motor.
It is important to make sure that you have a
large enough feed opening as a smaller one will limit the amount of
paper you can enter at any one time. The size of this opening
varies from model to model so always make sure that you check. On
most shredders, this ranges in size of about 8 to 18 inches. Twelve
inches is sufficient for most documents, but the larger the
opening, the less frequent paper jams are.
By investing in a good quality paper shredder,
you are securing the personal information of your staff and
clients. You are also protecting yourself from business espionage,
which can be extremely damaging. By researching and planning what
shredder will suit your business needs, you are already half way
there.
Aurora AS890C 8 Sheet Crosscut Paper/Credit Card Shredder with Basket
Amazon Price: $39.99 Average Customer Rating: 3.5 Review (rating: 5): Arrived quickly after ordering. This paper shredder easily takes multiple sheets of paper at once, and has been used to shred old credit cards, which it did with no problem. There is a window in the front of the waste basket which makes it easy to see how full it is and know when it needs to be emptied.
We shredded many years of our parents ancient tax, medical and other statements over a several month period and really should have lubricated much sooner.
I note that you are supposed to put the shredder in reverse for a minute periodically which we have done probably 10 times. Make sure you do so in conjunction with your recommended lubricating.
The lube speeds things up marginally but our shredder stops with the bin full light on frequently when the bin is not even half full. THis may be due to the fact that we did *NOT* lubricate as directed.
Word to the new shredder owner: Dont skip applying the lube! This stuff would have saved me problems and even now will extend the life of the shredder.
Fellowes 32057 Powershred P-57Cs Shredder
Amazon Price: $68.53 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 Review (rating: 5): I wasn't expecting much from this shredder. I just bought it cause it was a good deal but I was impressed on how well it performed it's task. This is one mean shredder.
Aurora AS810SD 8-Sheet Strip Cut Paper/CD/Credit Card Shredder with Basket
Amazon Price: $29.99 Used Price: $27.99 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 Review (rating: 2): A paper shredder has one simple job... shred paper. It did an ok job with it. I would have preferred a better job of shredding, since if one really wanted to put back together a document you shredded, it wouldn't be that hard. A better shredder would shred it in thinner strips, or shred it in squares like confetti.
My main issue was that it didn't take too long for the motor to die on me. I now have to get a replacement.
Fellowes 32177 Powershred PS-77Cs Shredder
Amazon Price: $144.95 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 Review (rating: 4): This is a great shredder. I've had it for about 6 months and it's been awesome. I've probably shredded about 130 gallons of documents with it. I've sometimes put in too many documents and jammed it, but it's easy to unjam.
However, the plastic bin that holds up the motor is cheap and it is showing signs of warping due to the heavy weight of the top. I am not sure how long the shredder is going to hold up without some kind of reinforcement on the right side.
One of my concerns with buying this shredder was the need for special bags, but I've found it works fine without buying the overpriced bags. I have a large garbage can in my office and I can dump the shredder bin into it without making much of a mess.
The motor is very quiet, the cross-cut pieces are small enough that I feel comfortable shredding very valuable information and discarding it in the trash. For the price, I feel it's a good buy--but it loses a star for being too cheap with the plastic bin.
