Paper shredders are gaining in popularity as a vital piece of home office equipment. If you don’t own one at the minute, now
might be the time to get your hands on one as it is one of the only ways to protect your personal and private information. It has become more and
more common for documents which were meant for the trash can have ended up in the hands of a criminal. Leaking personal and private information
can be extremely problematic for you and your family and can lead to identity theft, blackmail and more.
Businesses have for a long time had to be very careful about waste and disposing sensitive files whether they be on paper,
floppy disc, compact disc or other media. Dumping unwanted files is no longer an option and security within all levels of business – including
the trash is a must.
Many television programmes are there to educate the public on the need of personal security; showing how easy it is to get
vital details on individuals from just a few random documents. A great deal can be learned about one person by going through their trash can.
Home paper shredders have become increasingly more developed and while home security systems have gained in popularity at a
rapid rate, this does not include the paper shredder. As technology develops to help everyone in their personal safety, it should develop to
include the paper shredder in home security packs.
There are still people living in the countryside who are able to burn their documents in a barrel in their backyard, which
certainly helps with personal safety, but there are still more droughts and other issues why people can’t burn in their own backyard. A paper
shredder is still therefore important even out in the sticks. It is even worthwhile to shred the paper before you set fire to it; to be extra
safe.
If you are going to purchase a paper shredder, you will find that there a great deal of them on the market and the spec you
choose will completely depend on your budget. They can be as cheap or as expensive as you like. A pair of scissors is the most basic shredder you
will come across, although this of course is an extremely time consuming way to dispose of documents, although even scissors have been developed
and you will now find some with more blades for shredding. The next level up after a pair of scissors is a ‘hand-crank’ model. These have a very
small capacity and are only designed for very light use.
Next up is the battery designed compact shredder. Again, this is only for light use and is fairly delicate. This is perfect for
occasional use if you don’t need a bigger shredder. The most popular home shredder is one with an electric motor which while not as powerful as
industrial ones, is still a lot more powerful than other home devices. It can take more paper and a lot harder wearing. Whatever your preferred
spec, you will find one to suit your needs.
