Today, online role playing games (or simply
online RPG) are widely popular among computer gamers. In fact,
online role playing games are a multi-billion dollar industry. The
biggest and most popular of these online role playing games have
millions of players paying for subscription and are running on
servers that cost thousands of dollars to maintain.
Most of the massively multiplayer online role
playing games (MMORPG) have economies wherein players can buy and
sell currency and virtual items. Make no mistake about it --
thousands of MMORPG players are serious about their game that they
often would buy virtual goods with real money on auction sites like
eBay. However, this practice of buying and selling virtual goods in
the real world is banned by some online role playing games.
Everquest 2, World of
Warcraft, Ultima Online, Star
Wars Galaxies and The Lord of the RingsOnline are some of the online role playing games
available to date.
Debuting in 2004, Everquest 2 is
the sequel to the wildly popular Everquest. Subscribers to this
online role playing game pay $14.99 a month, which is actually
cheaper than all the other online role playing games available.
World of Warcraft is perhaps the
largest online role playing game to date, boasting more than 8.5
million subscribers. In order to play, players are required to
purchase a game card, which costs about $15 and is good for 30
days. Three- or six-month game cards are discounted. World of
Warcraft is undoubtedly one of the most successful online role
playing games as well as the most profitable to its creators since
the game brings them millions of dollars each year in revenue.
First appearing in 1997, Ultima
Online is considered as one of the original online role
playing games. It was a huge success when it came out and it still
is today, although it is not really in the same league as that of
World of Warcraft in terms of subscribership. Ultima Online's
original creator no longer has anything to do with the game today,
and the game has taken on a new direction. Currently, there are
only about 135,000 Ultima Online subscribers.
Star Wars Galaxies and
The Lord of the RingsOnline are
two online role playing games based on movies. These two online
role playing games did not really take off but hey have dedicated
players.
There may be a number of games in the list that
you haven't heard of before. A lot of these MMORPGs are country- or
region-centric, which means they are popular only in certain
countries or region. Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, Ultima Online,
Star Wars Galaxies and The Lord of the Rings Online are online role
playing games that enjoy international popularity and
following.
