The Key to Making a Marriage Work: A Lifetime of Commitment
People get married for many different reasons. That is why every single union is different, but the common goal is still the
same: to make the marriage work. Finding ways to make a marriage work in the long run is something that all couples need to do.
The fundamentals of making a marriage work start with finding that person with whom you are truly meant to be. Physical
attraction may be what sparks an interest in a relationship, but friendship and trust become more important when vows are about to be exchanged.
When people marry solely because of physical attraction, and they don't have anything in common, they might want to talk to a counselor before
walking down the aisle.
Establishing open communication is an important element to maintaining a successful marriage. Communication becomes even more
crucial after the first year of marriage. There is always a "honeymoon" phase -- when a couple rents an apartment and enjoys romance and a social
life. At some point, however, there are career decisions, mortgages and the birth of children. This is where communication becomes the main
key in making a marriage work.
Being honest about feelings isn't easy over time because people can grow apart. No one wants a divorce, but common goals may
change as a married couple matures. The best way to deal with this challenge is to be honest and not withhold anything, no matter how small
or big an issue is. However, picking the right time for talking about the future can make a difference in the outcome of the discussion. If
your spouse has had a bad day at work, it might be a better idea to wait and talk to him or her when he or she is in a better mood. When a
person is calm, he or she is much more open to suggestions. Staying involved with each other and being sensitive to what your spouse is
feeling is also important in ensuring that your marriage work.
