Wavefront Technology and  Lasik Vision Correction

The success rate of Lasik surgery has been improved by new methods being taken on board as a result of research. One such method is known as Wavefront technology, which gives the surgeon the chance to see and accurately record the slightest of variations in the surface of the eye, which makes the procedure that much more accurate and therefore clearer vision.

The idea behind Wavefront technology was first developed by astronomers so that they could see whether their lenses had anything wrong with them. Lenses are very important for telescopes because the objects astronomers are using are literally millions of miles away. In the 1970s, a sensor was developed to check the lenses electronically and it is this idea which has been adapted to Lasik surgery !V after all both deal with lenses!

This concept was brought into the field of ophthalmology and specifically to Lasik correction surgery in Germany.  Physician Josef Bille started to use the sensor which prompted other people to try it. In 1997 it was finally brought to the manufacturers who developed it even further.

The very first Wavefront system for Lasik corrective surgery was then approved. Basically, the system makes a map of the eye and sends all of the information which it has collected to the laser which is used in Lasik surgery. This enables precise alteration so that the best possible corrective procedure can be given.

In layman!|s terms, Wavefront technology which used in Lasik can be described very easily. It is basically a small, flat sheet of light (known as a wavefront) which is passed through the eye. It is then reflected off of the retina and passed back through the eye. It is captured by the Wavefront machine and all of the imperfections found in the eye are monitored and logged. These imperfections are then picked up by the laser.

There are actually a number of small, flat sheets of light sent into each eye and from a number of different directions. The results produce a kind of three dimensional map of the eye which is used in the surgery. You may not be aware, but there are actually over 60 different problems which can affect the eye without including the commonly found nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

All of the information which has been generated by the Lasik sensor is then converted, electronically, into a set of directions which are to be followed but the Lasik excimer laser.  This is a fairly new procedure which makes the surgery even more effective and much less intrusive. Ask your doctor about it today and remember what it is to be able to see without the need for glasses or contact lenses!
