Lasik
corrective
surgery is a
standard
procedure which
is more or less
pain free. When
you have the
corrective
surgery, you
will find that
the first step
of the
procedure is to
create a small
flap in the eye
so that the
cornea can be
reshaped. This
flap is created
either using a
small blade or
a laser. If a
laser cerates
the flap, you
will be having
bladeless Lasik
procedure,
which is also
known as
IntraLasik, or
IntraLase.
This article
will discuss
all of the pros
and cons of
having
IntraLase
surgery. Not as
much is known
about this as
is for the more
commonly used
blade surgery,
although it is
a lot less
daunting and
becoming
increasingly
popular.
Less than 10
per cent of
patients have
any serious
side effects
with either
surgery
although there
are some minor
side effects
which you
should be aware
of. Tis being
said however,
the majority of
people who
suffer from
complications
do so as a
result from the
flap being made
with the
microkeratome
blade. New ways
of creating
this flap have
been developed
as a result and
IntraLase is
one of
them.
Using
a laser to
create the
flap is a
new
concept
which is
used in
conjunction
with state
of the art
technology
which has
pre-programmed
the size,
depth and
position
of this
flap. A
small,
soft
suction
ring holds
the eye in
place,
which
causes no
discomfort
and the
only
effect
noticed is
a dimming
of vision
while the
eye is
being
worked
on.
The laser
creates very
small bubbles
of water and
carbon dioxide
which work as a
good buffer
between the
flap and the
cornea itself,
and therefore
the eye is
protected. The
entire process
of creating the
flap takes
approximately
one minute, so
it is all over
and done with
very
quickly.
There are many
advantages to
using a laser
to make this
flap. There is
no way in which
the cornea can
be damaged and
also there is
no chance of
getting the
size of the
flap wrong as
it is all
pre-programmed.
The vertical
edges of the
flap help with
the healing
process and
also decrease
the risk of the
flap wrinkling
or slipping of
the eye is
accidentally
bumped.
There are very
few negative
points
surrounding
this procedure.
One of the
downsides is
that it takes a
bit longer to
create, but
this is still
only one
minute. Also,
due to the low
level suction,
some patients
can have red
eyes
afterwards, but
this redness
will disappear
after a couple
of days.
Perhaps the
biggest
downside is the
cost. It is
still more
expensive than
traditional
Lasik surgery,
but over time
and as this
procedure
becomes more
and more
popular, the
price will
decrease.
