Kayaking is both a recreational and adventure sport. It can be as extreme or as serene as
you want it to be. Many kayakers take the sport incredibly seriously while others do it for fun. Which ever category you come into, one thing is
for sure; kayaking will allow you a different perspective on the scenes around you.
Kayak Basic Terms
Basic and common kayaking terms include: bilge pump (a hand pump used to remove water from inside the kayak); bow (the front of the kayak);
bulkhead (the vertical divider inside the kayak, made of foam and designed to help with flotation and reinforce the hull) chine (edges of the
kayak); demo boat ( a demonstration or test drive from a kayak dealer); dry bag (waterproof bag to ensure personal items are kept dry) and the
stern (back of the kayak).
Kayak Basic Equipment
There is not much equipment needed for kayaking, but these are the basic essentials: the kayak, a paddle, a life jacket (also known as a PFD),
a helmet and a spray skirt. Depending on which type of kayaking you are looking to do will determine which kayak is suited to you. Each type has
a different design, for example: recreational kayaking, sea kayaking, and creek kayaking. Your size will also affect the size of the kayak.
Paddles can be found in a multitude of styles. Again the type of kayaking being undertaken and your size will affect which paddle you have.
Life jackets must be worn by law. The type needed for kayaking is Type III . Ensuring that the life jacket fits properly is essential.
Helmets can also be found in a wide array of styles. You will find many different colors, designs and sizes. There are also
helmets offering protection to your face, which are similar to football helmets.
Spray skirts are designed to keep you dry while you are out in the water as well as keeping water out of the kayak. It should seal the cockpit
completely and each skirt will differ according to kayak style and size. The best material for spray skirts is neoprene, although sea kayaking
skirts are often made of neoprene and nylon.
Kayak Trails
You will find specially mapped out trails designed purely for kayaking on routes all across the US. You can choose long or short trails as
well as calm rivers or raging torrents. Some of the country’s nation forests also contain kayaking trails.
Kayak Tours
You will find that there are a huge number of Kayaking tours available throughout the country, each offering the chance to see areas from a
different perspective than by land.
You can enjoy a ride through Hawaii or see killer whales up close and personal in Alaska. You can even enjoy some of the roughest waters in
the world.
You also have the chance to gain access to areas that would otherwise be unreachable. You will find that you become at one with nature and
have the chance to fully explore and take advantage of the beauty that is all around.
