Kayaking

Basic Kayaking Equipment for Beginners

If you wish to begin kayaking you will find that not a lot of equipment is required. Essential items include a kayak and paddle; life jacket; helmet and spray skirt.

If you want to surf or perform tricks, you will need a ‘playboat’. If you want to explore rocky rivers, the ideal kayak is a creek boats while conventional river kayaks provide stability and are perfect for first timers. The size and shape of your kayak will depend on your height, size and where you want to go in it. It is important to test out your new kayak before you buy it and you can do this through most retailers.

To buy a second-hand kayak is a lot cheaper than to buy a new one. Look in your local classifieds to find one as well as online auctions, websites and stores.

It is important that you buy the right paddle. The correct paddle for you again depends on a number of different factors including your height, weight, strength and paddling style. For example, if you are not very tall, you will get much more benefit out of shorter paddles as they are easier to control and thus you can go a lot faster. Taller people and those who prefer a slower pace are suited to longer paddles.

Kayaking paddles are made out of a number of different materials. Some are wood, while others are fiberglass; carbon fiber and aluminum. These aluminum paddles are ideal for beginners as they are light and easy to use. If you are experienced in other water sports, you may already own a lifejacket. If you are a novice to all water sports, you can buy a life jacket and most sports stores, sailing equipment store and over the internet, either online auctions, discount stores or specialist sites.

You are required by law to wear a life jacket. They are also known as personal flotation devices (or PFDs). You should always choose your life jacket carefully; making sure it is suitable for the type of kayaking you will be undertaking. Kayaking helmets should always fit well and be of good quality because they can save your life. Although, like most things, fashion has enveloped the use of helmets and they now come in a variety of colors and styles.

Spray skirts are essential to keeping water out of the cockpit, thus keeping both the kayak and kayaker dry. Different forms of kayaking need different skirt styles. For example, whitewater spray skirts are generally made of neoprene while recreational spray skirts are usually made of nylon. One thing all spray skits have in common is that they feature a grab loop. This allows the kayaker to break the seal immediately if the need arose. Spray skits fit around the kayaker’s waist and therefore, waist size is the way that they are measured, although it may also be necessary to take into account the size of the cockpit.

All of the above items are necessary if you are looking to begin kayaking. Other optional items include a dry bag (ideal for storing snacks and small items); a dry top (a waterproof jacket which comes with short or long sleeves) and a spray jacket (another type of waterproof jacket.)

Kayaking allows people the chance to venture to places that they would otherwise not be able to get to. They are also very relaxing and extremely fun. The light weight of kayaks ensures that using them is easy, regardless of experience and due to the little amount of equipment which is needed, it is relatively affordable.
