America's Scenic Trails: Minnesota's Superior Hiking Trail
Minnesota is home to one of best American hiking trails, the Superior Hiking Trail. The trail stretches 235 miles along the Minnesota ridge line. This scenic hiking trail is within the Superior National Forest, over Lake Superior.
Developed during the 1980s by a group of hiking enthusiasts, the Superior Hiking Trail is maintained by the Superior Hiking Trail Association. To date, more than 3,000 hiking enthusiasts are members of the association, each one helping in the maintenance of the hiking trail and participating in efforts aimed at promoting to make the hiking trail even better.
The Superior Hiking Trail is regarded as among the most scenic hiking trails in the US. This hiking trail can be accessed in 75 different points and covers terrain from Two Harbors, Minnesota all through 7 state parks including Split Rock and Tettegouche, and extends all the way to the Canadian border.
The Superior Hiking Trail's highest point has been measured to be 1,750 feet above sea level. Its lowest point is 602 feet above sea level. The Superior Hiking Trail is regarded as a moderately difficult hiking trail. The scenic hiking trail is also notable for Severe weather conditions and black bears.
The Superior Hiking Trail has campsites for those who plan to hike for an extended amount of time. There are over 80 campsites throughout the hiking trail and there are parking lots every 5 to 10 miles. While hikers have access to water along the hiking trail, the water must be filtered prior to drinking. Hikers can bring their pets on their hikes but they must be kept on leashes. From mid-May to mid-October, hikers can avail of the shuttle service along the trail.
The Superior Hiking Trail Association is reportedly adding an additional 40 miles to the already long hiking trail. When completed, hikers will be able to hike through the forests in Duluth, Minnesota. Hikers do not pay any fees to hike the Superior Hiking Trail, nor do they have to make reservations or obtain permits before going on a hike.
