How Hearing Loss Can Affect You

No one is immune from the disabling condition of hearing loss. The National Center on Hearing Assessment and Management estimates the number of infants born deaf every year is almost thirty-three, plus one out of ten adults will sustain some form of hearing loss. As people age, hearing loss becomes more common. However, hearing loss can also develop in young children or may occur at birth.   Your lifestyle has a great impact on whether you will suffer a hearing loss. That is why it is essential that you protect your ears and are careful around loud noise so that you do not join the ranks of those with hearing loss.

The American Speech Language Hearing Association reports that hearing loss can involve three different types. American School Health Association webpage. Obstruction in the outer ear canal does not allow for muffled or faint sounds to be heard - this is known as conducive hearing loss. This could happen because of the build-up of wax or even due to the small bones in the ear being damaged. Surgery will typically correct a conductive hearing loss. Injury to the cochlea inside the ear or nerve endings connecting to the brain can cause sensorineural hearing loss. Disease, illness, injury, and even certain medications can cause this kind of damage. You can not correct this kind of hearing loss with surgery. When both the inner and outer ear are damaged, the type of hearing loss is called mixed loss.

Adult hearing loss has many different causes, as listed by the ASHA. Loss of hearing can be caused by disease, infection, medications, and trauma to the head. It is a common myth that exposure to loud noises, such as in the workplace or listening to loud music, can cause sudden hearing loss.  In some cases that's true, but not usually. The inner ear is primarily affected by Meniere's disease; symptoms of this condition include ringing in the ear, vertigo, or an inability to hear. Otosclerosis is a rare disease of the ear which both irritates the ear and prohibits the stapes, a tiny bone, from moving. Exposure to some kind of trauma, like a ruptured eardrum or an abrupt change in air pressure, can cause a sudden loss of hearing. Exposure to loud noise over a prolonged period is another source of hearing loss.

How Hearing Loss Can Affect You Adult hearing loss is one thing, but in a child, it's a completely different thing. Most commonly hearing loss in children is caused by build up of fluid that causes an ear infection. Otis media is usually temporary and can be cured. There is on the other hand,a condition in children known as congenital hearing loss,it happens at birth and often it is genetic. Maternal diabetes or premature birth are two of several factors that can bring about or help bring about congenital hearing loss.

In many cases, hearing loss can be avoided. Individual lifestyles can have an effect on hearing loss in just a few years. Some hearing losses are the result of an unexpected occurrence, like an accident. An audiologist can help you to determine how to treat your hearing loss. The aid of hearing devices or instruments can help you to regain, to a certain extent, your hearing ability; they can give you an idea of which device will be most helpful to you.

I sought out this book after losing much of my hearing to both genetics and noise. I was impressed with Seidman's credentials, and bought the book.

It's terrific. Not only is it a book about saving your hearing, but it's a comprehensive 'how to stay healthy' book. But be warned, if you do not lead a healthy lifestyle, you will have to make changes.
