All about Behind the Ear Hearing Aids

There are a number of choices for hearing aids if you have a hearing defect. You will find aids which fit inside the ear as well as the models which sit completely in the ear canal. Judging on cosmetic reasons only, one would expect these to be the most popular. This is not true however as BTE (Behind the ear) devices are far more common.

BTE hearing aids are made up of an ear mold that fits inside the ear and a piece of tubing which connects the ear mold and the hearing aid, which sits behind the ear. This tubing is known as the tone hook.  The actual hearing aid has a control to turn it on and off as well as control for volume. There is also a battery compartment and a microphone which sits atop the aid. Sounds are sent to the ear mold through the tubing.

Children are usually fitted with BTE aids for a number of reasons. Firstly, they are far more durable than other styles and also, no great skill is required in putting it in and operating it like other more complicated devices. They are suitable for children of all ages and also just as suitable for adults.

If children do encounter any problems with BTE hearing aids, these are usually very minor and can be resolved quickly and easily. One such problem which can arise is that   as their ear canal grows, so their aid gets more uncomfortable. This can be rectified by getting fitted twice a year. Another problem which can be encountered is that the child’s ear is not large enough to hold the hearing aid. This should however not be a problem if they have a professional fitting, although if their ears are simply too small, there is a device known as a ‘Huggy’ which helps fit the hearing aid to the head as well as the ear.

BTE hearing aids are generally larger than those which fit into the ear and as a result can take larger batteries and are thus more powerful than smaller designs. They are ideal for all sorts of hearing loss from mild to more profound deafness. They are also suitable for people suffering from arthritis as the controls are a lot bigger. Arthritis is common in older wearers. As well as these benefits, BTE hearing aids also come in digital forms which allow for a lot more features and a much better sound.

Overall, BTE hearing aids are extremely durable, very powerful and exceptionally easy to use. They are perfect for use with children and even come in a wide choice of colors and styles. However, one of the main reasons for their popularity is is the availability of BTE aids in digital forms. The sound improvement is drastic and the added features allow for easy listening and far fewer problems.
