Many people are confused by the idea of
transsexualism, which is a term that describes those who are
transgenders. Some feel these people are simply confused about
which gender they are, due to events that happened early in
life. Others feel they are people who were physically altered
at or near birth and had no choice about which gender they were
brought up as. However, transgenders are people from both
groups and they exist worldwide.
Most debates surround transgenders who were born and raised
as the sex they are genetically defined to be. Some in society
feel this "condition" is just an excuse to practice
homosexuality, while others believe abuse and rejection from
the opposite or same sex played a role in this gender
confusion. Regardless of how the person feels, transgenders are
left with the question: Did God make a mistake with me? They
may never get the answer they're searching for, but
transsexualism for these people is highly confusing.
The second group of people, those physically altered at
birth, tend to be seen as victims. But, this doesn't help with
the ridicule for not looking or acting like the sex they were
brought up to be. At the same time, the transsexualism problem
is easily identifiable, as these people are usually on hormone
therapy and have been for quite some time. Some transgender
dating leads to marriage and later one person discovers their
true gender identity through medical records or a DNA test.
With this knowledge, some will have transgender surgery. Though
most people can discover their true gender through testing
there are a few who even have ambiguous DNA - both male and
female.
For those dealing with transsexualism, the need to feel
accepted and loved for who they are and not what they're
dealing with is a high priority. Some in society try to hide
these people away, but really have no understanding of what
transgenders go through or who they are. Despite how society
feels, there is a need for transgender help for these people to
be able to sort out their feelings of confusion, whether from
feeling wrong in their own skin or because of having been
physically altered at birth.
