Offering
Transgender Support Can Be Very Rewarding
A transgender individual, regardless of
being born as a male or female, may identify themselves as a
heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual. Naturally, we are all
identified as male or female when we are born, as well as by
other people as being a male or a female. In the case of
transgender individuals, this identification by other people
may feel incorrect. They may identify more-so with the opposite
sex. The feelings of not belonging or being identified
incorrectly by others can lead many individuals to seek
transgender support groups.
Most people today do not give support to those with issues
of transgender. Not necessarily because they don't want to, but
simply because they do not understand. Education is a serious
requirement for promoting acceptance and support in the
transgender community. Unfortunately, due to phobias, like
homophobia, many people, specifically heterosexual, do not want
to take the first step; that being education.
Fortunately, there are those today who want to
educate themselves about transgender groups. In fact, most
transgender groups not only allow, but welcome non
transgender people into their communities. The main goal
of transgender groups is to promote acceptance and
understanding. A transgender teen, for example, has all of
the growing pains of other teens, with the added weight of
being different, and often looked down upon, sexually.
Offering transgender support can be very rewarding. To
know that you have committed to such a wonderful cause is
an amazing feeling. The first step to offering true
support is to understand the community as it is. After you
have that understanding you are able to then promote that
love to others.
Transgender teens and adults exist outside of mainstream
society, and even though the transgender teen community has not
necessarily grown in numbers, it has in terms of self
acceptance. Many transgender teens and adults have started a
hard road of looking for acceptance from others and seeking
transgender support, even though they may have managed to
finally accept themselves. You can find transgender groups in
most large cities and these are open to all. The groups welcome
those who are interested in learning about the overall
transgender community. Many homophobic people have stated that
after attending group meetings they changed the way they
perceive transgender individuals. Most heterosexuals have a
harder time accepting transgender people than homosexuals do,
simply because transgender people are often classified as
homosexual; although this can at times be incorrect.
