Eczema

Baby Eczema Affects both Mother and Child

Eczema can be common in babies, although usually occurs when they are two months or older.  It can affect older children and adults, although it is most seen in young babies. Mothers are naturally concerned about their baby’s welfare and therefore eczema affects both mother and child. Baby eczema looks raw and painful and therefore is a worry for a doting parent. Baby eczema is curable and usually babies will grow out of it, but it is important to remember that it does take time and will not go away overnight. Despite how it looks, it rarely leaves any scars and is quickly forgotten about.

Parents of babies who suffer from eczema should work closely with their doctor to ensure that the condition is being cared for properly. Bath time is important and should always be a careful procedure to make sure that symptoms are eased. The skin can become very dry and itchy and if it is scratched will weep and become painful. This situation should be avoided and can be lessened with baths. Babies do not understand that if they scratch, they will cause themselves pain so all steps should be taken to avoid this situation occurring. Your doctor will be able to recommend specialist soap which will help moisturize and ensure that the skin does not dry out.  Lubricants should always be put on the baby straight after every bath.

Baby Eczema Affects both Mother and Child With Time and Care Baby Eczema will Lessen and Eventually Disappear

Despite there being no cure for babies who suffer from eczema, there are treatments out there to alleviate the symptoms. It is very important that the area affected by eczema is handled carefully and not aggravated in any way. It is also important to remember that baby eczema is common – affecting as many as 10 per cent of babies and young children. It is often inherited and despite it looking painful and serious, it is not contagious and is easily treated. You do not have to worry about your child infecting any other children and it will usually completely disappear by the time your child becomes a toddler. Very rare cases do affect adolescents and even adults, but this is an extreme condition.

As baby eczema is usually inherited, there is no prevention and no way to avoid it. All you can do is treat it and try to alleviate the symptoms so that your child is comfortable. It often looks worse than it is, but it will lessen with age and should eventually disappear completely. Baby eczema is often interlinked with children who suffer from asthma and other allergies. These are all inherited so again, cannot be avoided.  Eczema will usually appear on the baby’s forehead first before moving to other areas of the body such as elbows, wrists and knees.
