Planning which Christmas Tree You Are Going to Buy

As Christmas is only a matter of weeks away, it is time to start thinking about you Christmas tree. You can choose from a real or artificial tree as well as how you are going to decorate it once you get it home. Will you have a color scheme? What kind of lights will you use to decorate the tree? Do you want tinsel? Literally there are a number of questions which will need to be answered. If you only have a small apartment, you could consider a tabletop tree – which can look just as special.

Some Facts about Real Trees

If you are planning on buying a real tree you should wait until about two weeks before Christmas as they do need a lot of care and attention – not to mention water. They can often start to become very dry and brittle and their needles will begin to drop off and they will start to look very ugly. How dry your house is will also affect the tree – for example if you have heating, your house will be a lot dryer than if you have a real fire. There are many reasons why people prefer to have a real tree such as tradition and even the smell. Real trees have a wonderful smell, which is strongly associated with Christmas.  They might be fairly messy, but you can buy tree bags that sit under the tree to collect the needles.

Christmas Tree Artificial Trees

Artificial trees come in an enormous range which include pine look-alikes, evergreens, and you can even choose which size needle you want to use. You can buy chrome trees and ones that come ready decorated. They also come in a range of colors and themes such as snow covered or red ones.  Benefits include ease of storage, they don’t lose their needles and they are easy to put up and take down. If you feel that you will miss the smell of a real tree, you can buy a pine-scented spray.

Decorating both types of tree takes time and you want to ensure that you have everything you need before you begin. A fully decorated tree really helps to get into the Christmas spirit and is a great way to involve the family.

Average Customer Rating: 4.5
Review (rating: 5):
The tree stand is the best one I ever have had. It was so easy to use. My husband held the tree straight and I pumped the handle a few times and the tree is extremely stable - straight too. There is a water level indicator that pops up. I put the tree skirt around it so I can tell if I need to put in more water easily. I heartily recommend it.

Spode Christmas Tree 12-Piece Dinnerware Set with Mugs, Service for 4
Amazon Price: $89.99
Average Customer Rating: 3.0
Review (rating: 1):
On Thanksgiving we were shocked to open up our china storage cases and find that the green band on our Spode was chipping off. Mind you, these plates have been used only a few times over the past 12 years. We store them in cushioned cases, with bubble wrap between each plate. We have NEVER put them in the dishwasher. They have been treated and stored with great care as they were a gift from a deceased loved-one.

Now on Amazon, I see that there is a clear problem. Too many people are reporting paint failures for this to be caused by dishwashers or improper care. The people that have had their sets for 20+ years - obviously there was a time when Spode took great care to produce quality china. Today however, you never know what you will get. The Spode name is no longer necessarily a sign of quality.

What I am most surprised about is this comment on the Spode website: "Certain tableware patterns will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm." Certain? Which? The ones that are flaking apart on our holiday tables??

When lead paint chips/peels/flakes, lead dust can land anywhere. This is a serious health concern far more important than just our plates not looking good! E-mail Spode and let them know that this is unacceptable!
