What to do if your child is a victim of bullying

A grave worry for most parents is that their child will become a victim of bullying. Unfortunately however some parents believe that bullying is all part of growing up and that it is no big deal. They do not realize just how serious bullying can become if it is not dealt with. There can be tragic consequences if it is left.  The effects of bullying can carry right on into adulthood if its not dealt with and could ruin someone¡¦s life to the point where that actually commit suicide. You need to react according to the situation; as a parent it is your responsibility to protect your child, to the best of your ability.

If your child confides in you and tells you that they¡¦re being bullied, you need to sit down with them and talk it through. It will be a big deal for them to finally admit it and mean that it is serious enough for them to ask for help. They will often be reluctant to talk about it so you need to be very sympathetic and actually listen to what they are saying.  Your child will be scared that by telling you they will inflame the situation so you need to be very understanding and reassure them that they have done the right thing.

your child is victim bullyingYou child will no doubt be afraid that by confiding in you, they are leaving themselves wide open to the bullying getting worse. It is vital for you to explain that the only way for it to stop is through adult intervention.  By taking the correct action, you can stop this case of bullying and prevent further attacks.

You need to find out how your child has tried to stop the bullying themselves and give them other ideas. If the bullying reacts in the right way, the likelihood is that the bully will stop. If you feel that your child is not at risk of being hurt physically or emotionally, you should let them try to stop it.  A bully can often be stopped by ignoring them or using humor as a defense mechanism.  If your child is confident when he approaches the bully, he will find it a lot easier to diffuse the situation.

If however you are notice a change in your child¡¦s confidence and they appear to be withdrawn, you need to intervene immediately. Contact the child¡¦s school and let their teacher know what has been going on and work together with them to find a solution. You should also consider speaking to the parents of the bully, although this can sometimes be a bad idea. You should always talk to the school first as they will know the parents of the bully.
