There
is a common
misconception
when people
think of
childhood
bullies. It is
believed that
they are
children who
suffer from low
self-esteem.
While this is
true for some
cases, bullies
can often be
very popular
and confident
and bully
people to show
their power or
even to show
off in front of
their friends.
They can often
have lots of
friends who egg
them on. There
are certain
children who
may become
bullies and you
need to know
what to watch
out for if you
are worried you
child may be
bullying
others.
Although,
always remember
that while many
bullies will
show these
signs, not all
will.
Bullying is
very different
with boys and
girls, although
the signs for
both sexes are
similar. Male
bullies are
often bigger
and more
popular and can
also be more
aggressive.
They may show
signs of
impulsive
behavior and
mood swings.
They can have
bad tempers and
the inability
to cope with
certain
stresses.
Male bullies
often need to
be dominant and
take their
aggression out
on others. They
will not be
able to
sympathize with
their
victims.
Of
course, if your
child behaves
in this way, it
does not
automatically
mean that they
are gong to
become a bully,
but it does
increase the
risk. Showing
your child how
to cope with
stress in a
positive way
will help them
from bullying
others.
Female bullies
show similar
signs as they
are growing up,
although girls
tend to be much
more emotional
when they bully
and it is all
about
psychological
ways to
intimidate
their victims.
If your
daughter often
excludes others
in a group or
is generally
not nice to
other children
less fortunate
than herself,
she may become
a bully. Female
bullies love to
gossip and also
show impulsive
behavior and
bad tempers.
They may be
more
aggressive, but
it is more
about the way
they speak
about other
children that
will give you
the signs.
It
is important to
realize that
all children
have certain
factors which
may lead them
to becoming
bullies, but as
long as you
teach them
right from
wrong and look
for the signs,
you will be
able to prevent
them from
becoming a
bully. If you
give your child
little
attention and
basically let
them get on
with whatever
they want, they
will not see a
problem in
treating other
people with
little respect.
You need to be
their role
model and also
make sure you
discipline them
correctly – not
too little or
too much. You
need to teach
them how to
solve their
problems
positively as
well as how
important it is
to treat other
people with
respect.
Their home life
will have a
huge impact on
how they behave
at school and
how they treat
other children.
Not all bullies
come from
broken homes or
are poorly
disciplined.
Your child
needs to know
right from
wrong and also
that they will
be punished if
they disrespect
others or
threaten or use
aggression.
Bullying is
detrimental to
all concerned
and needs to be
prevented
before it even
begins. If they
are aware that
bullying of all
forms is
unacceptable,
they will be
much less
likely to
become a bully
themselves.
