Many
children at
some point in
their school
life are
victims of
bullying.
Unfortunately,
most children
find it very
difficult to
know how to
stop or prevent
any more
bullying and
this is where
adults must
step in. There
are a number of
different
reasons why
children bully
others and each
case is
different –
both in terms
of reasons why
and in
severity.
However,
regardless of
how serious the
bullying is, it
should never be
accepted and
strict measures
should always
be taken to
prevent it from
happening
again. If you
feel that your
child is being
bullied or even
at risk of
being bullied,
there are a few
steps you can
take to prevent
it from
occurring.
Bullying
usually takes
place while
children are
unsupervised
such as in the
playground. Try
to make it
clear to your
child that if
they can make
new friends,
the bully is
less likely to
target them
because the
will not be on
their own at
break times
etc. Another
way to prevent
bullying is to
advise your
child to walk
away from such
situations
where bullying
might be taking
place. Ignoring
the bully’s
attempts is
often the best
way to prevent
further attacks
because the
bully will get
bored and they
do it for a
reaction from
their
victim.
Generally,
bullies
tend to
pick on
children
who are
not
confident
or who
might be
different
in some
way.
Teaching
your child
to have
confidence
in
themselves
is an
excellent
way to
prevent
being a
target of
bullies.
However,
always
remind
them if
they do
find
themselves
being
bullied,
the best
way to
prevent it
from
happening
again is
to remain
calm and
confident.
If they
burst into
tears, the
likelihood
is that
they will
be
targeted
again
because
they
reacted.
They
should use
an
assertive
voice and
tell them
to
stop.
Bullies usually
tend to pick on
children who
they feel are
weaker than
them. Because
of this, it is
a good idea
that you get
your child
involved in
certain
activities
which will
increase their
confidence such
as sport, music
or drama. If
your child
excels in one
field, this
will give them
a lot of
confidence to
pursue other
interests and
will also help
them stand up
to those who
may pick on
them.
Self esteem and
confidence is
often the best
prevention when
it comes to
bullies as the
last thing they
want is someone
standing up to
them.
If
your child is
taught how to
properly
respond to
bullies from an
early age and
if you try and
give them the
confidence to
believe in
themselves, it
will be a lot
harder for them
to become a
target. Self
image is very
important at
school and if
your child is
confident
enough, they
will have a
very good
self-image.
Also, make sure
that you stress
that if your
child does
become a target
of bullies that
it is not their
fault and it is
in no way
acceptable.
They must tell
you straight
away if they
are being
bullied.
