What is Social Anxiety Disorder?

It is completely natural for a person to get nervous when he has to speak in front of a group of people or for him to be overcome with emotion when he walks down the aisle to say his wedding vows, for instance. However, there is a mental illness that's different from the occasional and understandable apprehension about interacting with people in public.

The common medical term for this mental illness is social anxiety disorder. A person who suffers from social anxiety disorder has difficulty living a normal daily life because he is afraid to socialize in any way. An anxiety attack can happen whenever the affected person is confronted with having to meet with friends, loved ones or colleagues in a group setting.

He may suffer from blushing, sweating, feelings of nausea, trembling and may even stammer when speaking. Additional symptoms of social anxiety disorder include a high fear level, constant worry and uneasiness at events and gatherings. When these symptoms become chronic and persistent, this is when the condition qualifies as a mental illness.

Social Anxiety DisorderWhen an individual suffers from the symptoms of social anxiety disorder one or two times, he may start to become fearful of experiencing them whenever he is in public or in social situations. This is a cycle that is hard to break, but it is very possible.

Medication and psychotherapy are ways that social anxiety disorder is treatable. Cognitive behavior therapy is another method that has been successful at treating patients with social anxiety disorders.

Often, individuals who are diagnosed with social anxiety disorder are prescribed medications such as Paxil or Welbutrin. Either one of these medications, along with therapy, may reduce the symptoms of social anxiety disorder and help affected individuals enjoy their life again.
