General anxiety disorder has become one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States. In fact, almost 20% of American adults are suffering from general anxiety disorder. This is due to the fact that this condition goes undiagnosed until the affected individual decides to take charge of his life and ask his doctor the right questions in order to receive the treatment he needs.
Approximately one third of adults suffering from general anxiety disorder has exhibited symptoms of the condition when they were children, but they were, unfortunately, not diagnosed properly. Parents may not understand the source of anxiety in their kids. This inability to understand can have serious consequences when these children enter their teen and adult years. This is the reason that a condition such as general anxiety disorder is challenging for doctors to identify when it comes to working with adults. A patient who may not understand what he is going through may not seek out help, simply because he thinks his emotional outbursts are a normal part of his daily life.
Of course, each one of us faces one form of anxiety or another every day. The list events and situations that can cause anxiety can seem endless. Stress can come from anywhere: financial problems, losing a job, waiting for a medical test result, death of a loved one -- these are just a few of the events that can trigger negative feelings, including anxiety.
However, mental health professionals have made great strides to prevent people from suffering general anxiety disorder by providing more education and information. Taking action is easier than ever. This fact makes it beneficial to address personal issues and get the right treatment to cope with whatever problems life brings you.
