Visiting Anchorage, Alaska

Nicknamed "The City of Lights and Flowers," Anchorage is a city located in the south central part of Alaska. Anchorage is a city that is not like any other city in terms of splendor, beauty and wild life. It is not a coincidence that Alaska's motto is "Big wild life." Spectacular is a word that aptly describes Anchorage.

Anchorage has a land and water area of 5,000 square kilometers. About 500,000 people or approximately 50% of Alaska's entire population live in Anchorage. Although Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, it is still considered mid-sized. The residents of Anchorage are very loyal to the city, giving the city a unique charm and hospitality that draws many tourists to it.

The Chugach Mountains, Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm border Anchorage. Anchorage is subarctic with some very frigid and bitterly cold temperatures. The summers are very short with a high temperature maxing out at around 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The average winter time temperatures dip down as low as five degrees Fahrenheit during the day. 

Visiting Anchorage, AlaskaNaturally with the temperatures dropping so low, the most popular season for tourism is summer.  Tourists can travel to Anchorage by either Alaska Airlines or by the Alaska Railroad. To fully take in the scenery and majestic beauty of Alaska, the Alaska Railroad is recommended.

There are historic places for tourists to visit in Anchorage, including museums such as the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum and the Wells Fargo Alaska Heritage Library & Museum. Anyone who is interested to learn about the roots of Anchorage are recommended to stop by these two museums.

Other popular places to visit for an entire day are the H2Oasis Indoor Waterpark, the Alpenglow Ski Area, Alaska Zoo, Point Woronzof Park and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.  There are plenty of animals to see in Anchorage while enjoying the historic pieces of the land or the incredible beauty that is all around. Whether you are a history buff, water adventurer or animal lover, Anchorage, Alaska is sure to have something for you to enjoy!
