Volcanoes in Alaska

Of the 53 volcanoes located the United States, 43 of them are found in Alaska. You could say that Alaska is the home state for volcanoes. Aside from the 43 active volcanoes, there are 80 or more dormant volcanoes in the wilderness of Alaska.

Alaska sits on a huge set of islands, peninsulas and mountains that have created this volcano area. The region is part of the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula, the Wrangell Mountains and the infamous Ring of Fire.

The Pavlof Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Alaska, having erupted over 40 times since 1790. In 1912, the Novarupta/KatmaiVolcano had one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. Four feet of ash smoke covered the horizons and atmosphere, which caused a black out of the Northern Hemisphere for days. This volcano is found in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, which is in the Katmai National Park.
