A Guide to Buying an ADSL Modem Router

Recommended ADSL Modem Router

A little rudimentary knowledge about router technology should go a long way towards helping you decide which model of ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) modem router to buy for you and for your family. The host of options available through the market does make a little research imperative.

We will take a look at just three of the more popular ADSL modem routers today. Our lineup will consist of the Netopia Broadband Router, the JAHT WAM-4054P and the Thomson SpeedTouch 580. But before doing so, let us survey some recent trends.

More than ever before, consumers are appreciating portability in their electronic devices -- the ability to move about unrestricted by tangles of cables. Nowadays, the trend is in the direction that favors wireless ADSL modem routers over the erstwhile conventional wired ADSL modem router models. ADSL modem routers with four ports and a wireless interface have exceeded all other makes of modem routers in popularity.

A Guide to Buying an ADSL Modem RouterOf the three models we are considering, the JAHT WAM-5404P fits the bill for basic functioning and reliability. It is not top of the range stuff, though, and you might want to look at other types of ADSL modem routers, such as those by Netopia, Netgear or Thomson, if a more sophisticated device is what you seek.

The Thomson SpeedTouch 580 makes an excellent choice for top-of-the range home use, if affordability is not an issue for you. A built-in NAT (network address translation), four-port Ethernet switch, an 802.11g wireless access point, and a USB port count among its key features.

A personal favorite is the Netopia Broadband Router. I’ve had no disappointments with it during the lengthy span of time I have been using it. It offers a host of nice features, and proved a breeze to set up from the start. This one, and the aforementioned Thomson model are my top recommendations to prospective buyers of an ADSL modem router for their home.

When buying your ADSL modem router, you should see the following included in the package: an Ethernet cable, RJ11 lead, main power supply and a manual. While some models offer some more items, under no circumstances should the three just mentioned be left out.
