Major Consequences of having Low Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem is fact of life. Though this is not a decease, this condition is
very eminent on many people. This is not contagious, but suffering from low
self-esteem will gravely affect the person's outlook in life.
Low self-esteem is an internal condition where the individual's feelings,
beliefs, and emotion are constrained in a manner that he cannot express freely
what he is as a person. The feelings, beliefs, and emotion are reflected through
the person's treatment of himself and his perception towards other people around
him. Self-esteem itself can either be temporary or permanent psychological
condition. Low self-esteem for that matter can be temporary or permanent.
The duration of a person's suffering from low self-esteem is entirely dependent
on the person itself. If he is conscious about his condition and would want to
change it, there are methods on doing it. However, for a person to recognize
that he has low self-esteem and something must be done about it, he should learn
to accept who he is and believe that he can overcome it.
To person with low self-esteem, many things come into play and many things
appear as a consequence of his condition. Learning this would be easier to
others to determine if the person is suffering from low self-esteem. And
eventually, they may give understanding and assistance.
The major consequences of having low self-esteem are:
Depression - A person will low self-esteem tend to feel that he is
inadequate and incapable of doing things others can do easily. He may feel that
he is un-liked. This feeling would give them the idea that he will
likely be
rejected. He may also feel that he is inferior to other people thus he chooses
to be alone than on a group. He expects that everything he does is wrong that
others will criticize. As a result, he would choose to stay away from the places
where activities are happening. With depression into play, the person becomes
distrustful to other people.
Eating disorder - This low self-esteem consequence are more common to
girls. Since the society hails models with bodies 23% lower than the normal,
girls would become more and more persistent to belong. And most of the time,
they fail. Nonetheless, low self-esteem on women is becoming evident through
eating disorder. Anorexia, a more popular term for the eating disorder
characterized by voluntary vomiting or starving.
Lack of self-confidence - A person with low self-esteem would turn out to
be lacking with the ability to confidently prove to others that he has the
ability to do certain things.
Poor performance - Since he lacks self-confidence, there is no venue for
him to achieve goal. The result would be for him to perform poorly on the tasked
in front of him. He would just settle on the present and would not want to
explore on the things beyond his comprehension.
Poor social life - A person with low self-esteem lacks the capability to
interact with people normally. He cannot join groups due to the feel of failure
and criticism. He also does not want become part of something out of his comfort
zone. Thus, he chooses to be alone for it is safer for him. Low self-esteem

From the late 1960s to the early 1990s it was assumed as a
matter of course that a student's self-esteem was a critical
factor in the grades that they earn in school, in their
relationships with their peers, and in their later success in
life. That being the case, many American groups created programs
to increase the self-esteem of students, assuming that grades
would increase, conflicts would decrease, and that this would lead
to a happier and more successful life. Until the 1990s little
peer-reviewed and controlled research was done on this topic.
The concept of self-improvement has undergone dramatic change
since 1911, when Ambrose Bierce mockingly defined self-esteem as
"an erroneous appraisement." Good and bad character are now known
as "personality differences". Rights have replaced
responsibilities. The research on egocentrism and ethnocentrism
that informed discussion of human growth and development in the
mid-20th century is ignored; indeed, the terms themselves are
considered politically incorrect. A revolution has taken place in
the vocabulary of self. Words that imply responsibility or
accountability—self-criticism, self-denial, self-discipline,
self-control, self-effacement, self-mastery, self-reproach, and
self-sacrifice — are no longer in fashion. The language most in
favor is that which exalts the self — self-expression,
self-assertion, self-indulgence, self-realization, self-approval,
self-acceptance, self-love, and the ubiquitous self-esteem.
—Ruggiero, 2000
Peer-reviewed research undertaken since then has not validated
previous assumptions. Recent research indicates that inflating
students' self-esteem in and of itself has no positive effect on
grades. One study has shown that inflating self-esteem by itself
can actually decrease grades. (Baumeister 2005)
High self-esteem correlates highly with self-reported happiness.
However, it is not clear which, if either, necessarily leads to
the other.
