Thomas McCulloch Fairbairn, a golf fanatic, revolutionized the miniature game in 1922 with his formulation of a suitable artificial green that made it latent to create the miniature courses wherever space provides for it. With this surge of popularity, over 150 rooftop courses in New York City alone were created by the late 1920's.

Miniature golf can also be played at a highly competitive level in the United States and all around the world. In the US, there are two organizations that offer tournaments at the professional level. The Professional Putters Association holds miniature tournaments at Putt - Putt Golf Courses. The US Pro Mini - Golf Association also has tournaments.
